The Wawel Royal Castle has an intimate relationship with conservation. The Castle itself has been the subject of two monumental restoration programs that lasted roughly from 1905 to 1939 and from 1990 to 2009. Since its inception as a museum, a vital aspect
of its activity has been the conservation program.

The Wawel Castle’s conservation facilities are among the best-equipped in Poland. The Conservation Department employs thirty-three conservators with various specializations working in seven conservation studios:
• Textile Conservation
• Archeological Objects Conservation
• Paper and Leather Conservation
• Furniture Conservation
• Gilding Studio
• Decorative Arts Objects Conservation
• Paintings and Sculpture Conservation
