The museum library was created in 1949 as a reference collection of the Archive and Library Department of the Wawel History Museum. In 1952 it was combined with the library of the Wawel State Art Collection. At present  the library has about 16 000 inventory items, in line with the character of the Wawel Royal Castle collections. It contains resources on art theory and history, the history of Poland, especially 16th -19th centuries and other related topics. What is particularly important is the increasing collection of Waweliana – literature on Wawel history, events and people related to the hill, history of the museum and Wawel exhibits.
Thanks to exchanges with other museums in Poland and abroad, the library has a rich collection of catalogues from exhibitions, and catalogues of various collections of works of art. It also collects Polish and foreign magazines (410 titles). The library is indispensable to the Royal Castle Museum employees, and it is also used by employees of other museums, students, in particular art history, and guides.
Books are made available in the reading room only (building no. 5).
The reading room is open from Monday to Friday, 9-14.
